The Perfect Room - From Baby to Teen

When expecting a new baby, life is very exciting. The sonograms, shopping for baby clothes and picking out names are so much fun. Another great part of having a new baby is designing the nursery. While looking in the baby section one day I found a crib that was not just a crib. It could be converted into a twin size day bed and later into a full size bed. That made me think, "Why not design the whole nursery this way?" Often the first thing thought of when you hear the word nursery is pastels. These colors do not work as well as your child gets older. So, I have another suggestion. What if you were to decorate with something that would last for years?

The nursery is not going to be a nursery forever, so pick a theme that can be easily changed. Try a theme like the night sky. It is easy to do and can be used along with many themes. First paint the walls a dark blue. Then add smoky gray clouds in by ragging (using a wadded up rag to dab) on a medium gray paint in a circular pattern. Add glow in the dark stars and you have a night time sky. How do you make this look nice in a baby's room? Well it is all about the accessories. For a nursery you should add a bed time theme.

Place soft, sleeping bears all over the room and add a moon's silhouette on the ceiling for a "Good Night, Moon" theme. You could also look for nursery rhyme décor to match the "Hey Diddle, Diddle" poem. It would be precious to paint a cow jumping over the moon in the night sky!

As you design your nursery's theme, make sure you add a rug to protect the carpet. The rug will be a very important part of the room. Stay with the nighttime theme when choosing your area rug to add another element of design to the space. Find a dark blue rug to match the walls this will look nice and protect the floor from those nasty baby stains that tend to happen. Dark colors are the best choice for rugs in baby rooms because they hide dirt, spills, and stains.

As your child grows so will their interests. Liven up the room according to your child's style by cheaply making a few small changes. A good way to liven up the bed time themed room for a child is to take out the dark blue rug and add a rug with a map of the solar system. You could add a rug covered in constellations or one that featured the planets. You can hang more stars from the ceiling and give the room a science based theme that will be more appealing for an older age group.

When a child turns into a teenager, you can continue the transformation. Add a black light to the room. Take out the solar system rug and put in a neon rug in bright yellow or green. The rug will reflect the light very nicely and give it a spooky effect at night. This will give the room just the twist it needs to make it feel new to your teenager.

Design a room that is versatile enough that it will work for a boy or a girl. Get creative and you won't have to paint every time your child enters a new age or stage in life. Just a simple change in rugs can transform the look of your baby's room and make the paint and décor last for years.
